<![CDATA[Apache Spark Engineer - Platform - Senior]]> The Spark Platform team is building low-latency, distributed analytics infrastructure for Bloomberg based on Apache Spark.

Instead of building dozens of isolated Spark applications for individual problem domains, we are building a platform that makes it easy for teams to plug in their business logic without duplicating common functionality. This includes connecting to various datastores or real-time streams, figuring out a way to serverize Spark transforms or having to re-implement transforms such as currency conversion that are very common in financial analytics. But we can' t just use Apache Spark as is. We need to enhance open source Spark to fit our low-latency, high throughput and high availability contexts. That' s where you come in.

As part of our team, you' ll collaborate with a number of the core Spark contributors to co-design and co-develop enhancements to Spark in areas ranging from Performance to HA.
We' ll trust you to:
• Contribute to the development of the Bloomberg Spark Platform
• Interact with application teams to understand their specific requirements and drive the next set of features for the Spark Platform
• Meet with key players in the open source community to motivate necessary development efforts
• Contribute code to the Apache Spark community in areas ranging from Machine Learning to Spark HA
You' ll need to have:
• Strong programming proficiency in Java and Scala (a minimum of two years)
• An expert-level understanding of Apache Spark - your work will involve modifying its internals
We' d love to see:
• Experience with MLlib
• Open source contributions of any sort
• Professional experience developing analytics infrastructure

If this sounds like you, submit an application and watch our talk at Spark Summit East to learn more about Bloomberg' s Spark Platform (https://spark-summit.org/east-2016/events/spark-at-bloomberg/).

<![CDATA[C++ - Senior Market Data Publishing Engineer]]> From the biggest banks to the most elite hedge funds, financial institutions need timely, accurate data to capture opportunities and evaluate risk in fast-moving markets. But keeping pace with exchange-generated data from thousands of sources, each with its own proprietary format, data model, symbology, reporting requirements and subscription costs is a daunting challenge.

That’ s why Bloomberg offers a Market Data Service – a consolidated market data feed that provides the most comprehensive, normalized, real-time data access available from more than 330 real-time exchanges and more than 5, 000 unique contributed sources. This service delivers the data firms need to nourish a wide range of third-party and proprietary applications consistently.

Our Market Data Service team is responsible for aggregating and curating market data from all of the producers at Bloomberg and delivering it to our financial institution clients. We also develop the infrastructure for authorization and entitlements, enabling firms to monitor and manage usage.

We work to find elegant solutions for these complex business problems. We also solve challenging technical problems posed by the sheer volume and low-latency of the data. In order to keep up with the increased usage and feature requests from our enterprise clients, we’ re looking to re-architect this large scale, distributed system to improve its scalability and reliability. That’ s where you come in.
We’ ll trust you to:
• Familiarize yourself with the system architecture and our codebase and proactively identify opportunities and solutions for improvement
• Create scalable infrastructure that abstracts away market data business logic from our platform to provide better separation of responsibilities, stability, and performance
• Build efficient algorithms to marshal massive amounts of market data with low latency, improve our usage reporting and monitoring tools, making it easier to report data usage to exchanges as well as allocate costs to end- users
You' ll need to have:
• 3+ years’ experience developing multithreaded C++ code; asynchronous processing and network i/o
• A strong understanding of computer science fundamentals such as data structures and algorithms
• Experience building business logic in C++

The APIs and SDKs are also used by clients for privately publishing and consuming their own (non-Bloomberg) data while leveraging the global Bloomberg infrastructure for efficient, timely data distribution.

These toolkits, known as the BLPAPI, are used daily by more than 100, 000 Bloomberg customers to power global market data distribution to enterprise applications worldwide. If you’ re a polyglot looking to looking to leverage your expertise of API design, threading, and large-scale software architecture, read on.

<![CDATA[Software Developer]]> Since 2001, our software engineers have helped tackle the complex and interesting challenge of discovering value hidden in the world’ s data. We are pushing the technical envelope to solve these problems, and in the process are helping to redefine investment management and other fields. As the world of data continues to grow exponentially, the issues they address will only increase in difficulty, scale and excitement.

In order to meet these challenges, we’ ve built a data accumulation platform that allows us to ingest over 10 terabytes of data per day, and a custom distributed storage solution to store the over 50 petabytes of information we’ ve accumulated since our inception. We’ ve also built an entire suite of analysis tools that enable our quantitative researchers to utilize this data to produce predictive models that help us automatically invest each and every day.

This model-driven, technology-fueled approach to investing not only gives us a long-term advantage over old-school investors – it has also created a whole set of technical problems to solve that don’ t always have an obvious solution. This gives you the ongoing opportunity to build proprietary solutions and/or bring to bear the best open source options the market. We have created a robust infrastructure that empowers all of our engineers, and you will work within a collaborative work culture that ensures that a great idea can come from anywhere.

Problems at our level of complexity require you to possess a passion for learning as well as deep understanding across a wide array of technical competencies. We’ ve attracted technologists who possess special capabilities in a wide variety of domains including data transformation and visualization, performance optimization, cloud computing, and distributed systems. While we face large-scale problems, we hire only the best to take them on. This enables us to keep your team size small and your individual impact significant.

While there is no set recipe for success, we find that you will tend to have the following qualifications:
· You have at least a bachelor’ s degree in a technical or quantitative field. · You have an understanding of data structures and algorithms. · You have experience with Java (or other JVM languages), Python, C or C++. · You have extraordinary programming skills. · You have demonstrated experience in large-scale systems.
We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
